A long, long, LONG time ago (2007) I had just voted in my first election and I was so excited about Barack Obama winning! I went on Facebook and was met with a bunch of statuses from people who were feeling just the opposite. One such status was from a young lady that I knew from high school - let's call her Jane Doe. Jane, who is a white woman, posted how she was so confused because she felt we were just automatically supposed to vote for him because he was African American. I commented on the status and expressed that I didn't know anyone who felt that way, however, it is an added bonus that he is African American because it means a step in the right direction for our country's history and stated that the status seemed a bit racist because she was not black. Well, dear reader, imagine my surprise whenever she replied and scolded me to my bones. Turns out, this Jane Doe was, in fact, NOT the Jane Doe that I went to high school with and was, instead, the very African American Jane that I met in college. In my defense, I was on a sidekick with a tiny, grainy screen and her profile picture had a group of people. Also, HELLO same exact name! I digress. It was extremely embarrassing. Naturally, I apologized but also quietly deleted my original comment. We now know that the internet lives forever. A screenshot will never die and the north remembers because of this companies and individuals need to be very careful before posting. These days, anything can go viral and you do not want to go viral for the wrong things. Companies who post the wrong things can be boycotted and their ratings get tanked and individuals can lose their jobs, get kicked out of organizations or schools, and more. It is taboo, as an organization to delete negative reviews or comments from consumers because it can seem as if you don't care about the feedback you're receiving. It is best to lean into it, replying to the negative comments by addressing the issue and attempting to make it right while also adding what you, as an organization plan to do differently. Happy posting!
